Talk about bridging the gap between surf culture and urban lifestyle.

We are beyond excited to host the biggest pro surf event in the world on Long Island this September,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. We are also bringing the best and brightest Quiksilver, Roxy and DC athletes to New York City, the largest media arena in the world, for twelve days of surf, skate, BMX, fashion, art and music that will bring incredible global attention to these phenomenal athletes and the action sports culture and lifestyle.

Should be very interesting to note the event's impact on east coast surfing and participation within the youth market.

How the urban youth market got to where it is now started in immigration patterns of the seventies. Kids emerged in the eighties who made themselves known in pop culture. Guys like Mark Gonzales, Tommy Guerreo, Ray Barbee, Steve Cabellero, and Christian Hosoi were all innovators of style. They developed a following of admirers and awareness of their contributions. Now why wouldn't this only amplify itself going into 2011?

Just last week, I noted the significance of the grassroots snowboard movement. Ironically, the Gatorade Free Flow Tour was specifically mentioned for its role in developing athletes.

Today I saw that Jamie Madrid won Women's Slopestyle at Mountain High over the weekend. Just goes to show that the first wave of M.A.S. snowboarders has already descended down the hill...

Last Wednesday was my first 2011 volunteer shift at Ruby Hill Rail Yard. While there, I couldn't help but notice two Hispanic kids attacking one of the more challenging rails. Curious to know more about them, I struck up a conversation with their father in Spanish. It was obvious they were passionate about snowboarding. Turns out the boys, age 10 and 13, were regulars at Loveland and Copper Mountain. I'm keeping an eye on these two, cause you can see the potential they're riding holds...

It was reminder how powerful grassroots effort can be in growing the sport in the near future. There are avenues in place like the "Gatorade Free Flow Tour" that will allow for kids, like the one's I encountered at Ruby Hill, to move that next level. Its already happening...

The Free Flow Tour has certainly been the most successful in providing a springboard to stardom for athletes across action sports. Started six years ago with a version for summer sports, The Free Flow Tour has offering talented athletes 21-and-under a chance to test their skills against elite competition: Chaz Ortiz (2007 Free Flow skate park champ) won his second consecutive Dew Cup in October; Mike Spinner won the 2006 Free Flow Tour in BMX park and finished second in the Dew Cup standings in 2007 and 2008; and Timmy Knuth (2008 Free Flow skate park champ) was a finalist at the Dew Tour Championships in October.

It's in venues like a Ruby Hill Rail Yard, or Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, where the athletes of tomorrow are emerging. Change happens when you least expect it. Hopefully your paying attention and keen to it's affects. If not, that's ok, I am...

Action sports stories with elements of retro-acculturation are out there...

Going to South America is a journey I have looked forward to for the past three years of my existence. Ever since I heard of snowboarding there, I have been dreaming I could have a chance to place myself south of that equator.

I soon remember that Jonas Michilot has always dreamed to make his way through South America as well. His idea was to make it in the direction of Lima, Peru to reunite with his family there and explore his Peruvian heritage.

It's been a long time coming. I've foreseen it for the last 4+ years...

MediaPost recently shared some predictions for 2011 for the U.S. Hispanic market. While none of them really surprised me, the 5th one made me smile.

#5 The Birth of the Hispanic Youth Market

This will be the toughest nut to crack for marketers and advertising professionals of all stripes -- general market, Hispanic, digital, direct response, social media and everything in between. Yet I see Hispanic youth as the biggest marketing opportunity to come out of 2011.

While some marketers may not know where to start. I do, and it begins with the kind of thinking that spawned the M.A.S. Report. Since 2006, Equipo Roca has maintained a sustained effort to use the action sports culture and lifestyle as a source of understanding the population shift affecting the urban youth market.

Charles Bethea of ESPN Action Sports wrote an editorial on the report, and you an see why I'm smiling at the last 2011 prediction.

The report concludes: "Even isolated from the pending results of the upcoming 2010 Census, these statistics already point towards an inevitable 'tipping point' on the horizon. Clearly, the next wave of growth for the snow sports category squarely hinges on demonstrating and growing the value and appeal of the sport to multicultural millennials."
